Ah, Lain, that would have been my second guss. The two protagonists look remarkably similar. Nothing to do with the fact that they are done by the same guy.

It's Lain, but I can see why you would mistake her for Rakka. Like both of them.

First Time Reading the Manga
crane476
Almost a year since I first saw the anime I did something I said I would never do. I just decided out of nowhere that I wanted to read the manga. I'm not anywhere near finished yet but its already just as moving as the anime. My only complaint is the ending... not looking forward to that part. I"m already depressed from Lucy going off the deep end at the festival!

Its funny, I already know how things are going to turn out, yet Elfen Lied still manages to bring out the emotion in me. That's what makes it my favorite anime/manga. Still not sure whether I like the anime or the manga more, but I'll probably know when I finish the manga.

So to end, I'll ask the question that has been asked countless times before...

Do you like the anime or the manga better?

Zuko
Both have a sad and unknow ending... I do not think you can compare manga to anime because these are two different things.
I really love manga because you have a lot of story, but sometimes i like to stay in bed and watch the anime without giving pages.
They managed to make a successful anime!
It's a shame that is shorter.... But both are the best,

I've always loved the manga, its something that I've always wished could have had an Official English release and personally, I never knew why it never did considering more controversial manga's have had such releases. And with exception of a few things like Lilium, I've never enjoyed the anime, not only because it differentiated from the manga and not just at a later time too, but also because, it was simple. It lacked the story and development that the manga had. I always though that after watching the EL anime that at most, it would become something of a cult B-movie. Something that people liked but at least admitted was terribly flawed, but people seem to treat it like it was this masterpiece that won awards.

And truthfully, maybe the manga as much as I love it and as much as I can argue for it, may not as done as well as I hoped it would either. I will say this however, I point blank refuse to call anyone who hasn't read the EL manga, a true Elfen Lied fan. It's not just for EL either.

Hellsing manga, Fate/Stay Night Visual Novel, Higurashi Sound Novel (The last of which I have not seen so, even though I've read some of the mangas and seen the anime) The latter of which I grudgingly have to admit I probably enjoyed far more than I should have from a DEEN Studio product. I refuse to call myself a "true" HIgurashi fan. People need to read the original sources.

And you know what, I might not even be able to call myself a true EL fan even after reading the manga, especially as the only thing I can read is fan based translations. I have to put my trust in that the translations are correct and for the most part I'm sure they are. But as I have all 10 Volumes of the Official English Hellsing, I know that not only are there translation issues with the online versions, there are pages themselves not even prevalent in the online version.

Same thing I'm sure for Elfen Lied, there's probably things in the Official Volumes that help to explain a few things that are never given in the online translations.

But yes, if you enjoyed the anime, congrats it'll never be something that I'll probably enjoy. But I will once again say this, people need to read the manga, even if they don't enjoy it as much or at all in the end because at least now they'll get an understanding of what Lynn Okamoto was truly trying to accomplish.

ElfKira
The manga is quite better than the anime, it's almost an insult to compare them.

Animes usually portray their respectives mangas, the good things of the anime are the characters, which are less and worse in the anime, the story, which is alot worse in the anime, and the soundtrack. With that said, it's a pity the graphic style of the anime, the "cute design" of the characters, and the rushed ending.

The manga had so much potential, oh well, sometimes it's a matter of luck, as to who and how the producers create the anime.
You can watch epic animes in which the manga consisted in an uninsteresting plot and empty characters, due to the good work of producers, too bad the opposite happened to Elfen Lied.

crane476
True, producers can decide the outcome most of the time. The producer, Mamoru Kanbe, and Lynn Okamoto had a lot of clashes because of Kanbe's interpretation. It got to the point where Kanbe just didn't want to do the anime anymore, thus why its only 13 episodes.

I myself don't have any qualms about the anime. I really enjoyed it. Its still one of my favorite animes, and I still hope there's a second season. That being said, I'm still only halfway through the anime.

I think the reason I like the anime so much is because that's what I saw first, but honestly I think I'm going to like them both just because I like Elfen Lied so much.

Reric
I remember reading about how Mamoru Kanbe try to interpret Elfen Lied as being a romance which I believe just adds to problems. Elfen Lied, both the anime and the manga has never been about romance, it actually has very little of that in it. It would be best to call it a "tragedy"

I'm fairly certain that the anime was only 13 epsiodes long because it just didn't do well. It certainly had poor ratings in Japan and the I doubt it did too well outside of it either mainly because there hasn't been a single mention of continuation. Even the OVA didn't get an English release.

Studios create animes for the purpose of making money. A smart studio will do its best to follow its source as much as possible and if they have to make changes, do their best to incoporate those changes into the story that helps the story flow better or at least adds some sort of development.. It's the same reason why the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime, despite being being different from its original source, was so well done.

If the EL anime did well, you'd have had another season especially as the manga itself finished very soon afterwards.

And I honestly think all these are gathered together in manga.

As the anime... Give a little credit guys.. It was made about 10 years ago.... I'm pleasantly surprised that still has fans.

I still wouldn't classify it as a romance. It might have essence of romance in it, but out of all the things in it, I'd say romance is in it the least. The manga itself probably focuses a lot more on the Drama and Action part. We probably get a lot more romance out of Kouta and Yuka here then we would out of Kouta and Lucy, not that its saying much. And the anime is too short that there's not even enough time to focus on any sort of romantic aspects.

What Lucy might see as this beautiful romance for the only person who seemed to show her any kindness, I see as terrible obsession really.

ElfKira
Elfen Lied definitly has romance in it. However, romance is far away from being a major genre within the series.
It plays its role in the development of characters and the plot, but it is questionable wether turn-events and other considerable important scenes are directly influenced by romance or not.

crane476
Just finished reading the manga.... I'd have to agree with Reric... It is very much indeed a tragedy. More of a romantic tragedy though IMO. Despite it being so sad though, I loved it. So much more story and depth than the anime, even though after reading I still really like the animes spin on things too.

So yeah, Elfen Lied is my new favorite manga. And my new least favorite character is Kurama. After doing what he did to Lucy, hunting her down, killing Aiko, locking her up for most of her life she takes revenge. Yet after Lucy kills Mariko he still goes after her, as if he didn't deserve any of it. It just pisses me off. If it wasn't for him butting in after Lucy met with Kouta at the light house, she might could have lived and learned to deal with her DNA voice, but nooooo. Kurama just had to try and kill her.

I guess this is just me complaining because I would have preferred an ending with Lucy/Nyu/Kaede still alive, but thats just me. Like I said, awesome manga. I love it and its my new favorite!

ElfKira
Elfen Lieds main issue revolves around the hostility shared between Diclonii and Humans. On one hand, Humans are killing and torturing Diclonii for their own survival and scientific progress. For the other hand, Diclonii are genetically designated to wipe out the human race. This is the main issue of Elfen Lied, that's why it's a tragedy.

Things happening in the characters personal lives is secondary, main character included. Concerning Lucy, I also think drama would come before romance.

For the record, Lucy is reborn at the end as three different people, Lucy, Nyuu, and Kaede. So, well, we can consider them alive. Kurama actually had reasons for his actions, I personally find him one of the best characters, but that's up to each one to decide.

I also highly enjoy Dr. Kurama, actually my third favorite character in the manga. Especially the story that follows around him. He's basically just like Lucy, minus the psychopathic part. He's gone through hell himself, forced into servitude under Kakuzawa's ever tyrannical glare. He doesn't enjoy killing the Diclonius children yet due to both logic and because of Kakuzawa, he's forced into a position where he can't help himself. His rivalry works so well with Lucy becuase both characters have these harsh moments that neither of the other know about.

My other two favorite are.

#2: Surprisingly, Director Kakuzawa. While I don't enjoy the actual character himself, I find not enjoyment in someone who tries to rape and kill people for some sick amusement. I find that he's an excellent villain. Far better than his unneeded anime counterpart. He's cocky, proud and always on top. When everyone else was freaking out, he's casually in his office, just knowing that in the end, he's going to win.

And who could blame him.

He's got his Supercompuer daughter Anna litterally realizing the future for him. He's got his vector virus missle detonation plan ready which despite people trying to stop that, still succeded and would've have succeded if not for Professor Kakuzawa and most importantly Arawaka. He's got Lucy's brother on his leash. He has everything ready.

If he doesn't have that sadistic grin on his face, he's got this calm and collect look. He never gets furious or angry. When Lucy first excapes, you'd think someone who needed her so badly would throw a fit. No, he just sits down his chair and waits because he knows he'll be getting her. And even to the end, Kakuzawa's plan, at least t himself, was never out of order. He's deranged, murderous and lacks empathy yet is collect, calculating and stern. And needless to say he does at least have some manner of human emotions. He legitimately cared about his own daughter. He may not be a likable character but IMO, he's an awesome villain.

#1 Bando

Talk about someone who go tthe short end of the stick in the anime. Manga Bando is the greatest character int he entire story IMO. Add to the fact that he goes throught he most character development in the entire series makes him so much more interesting. But he still remains in that gruff additude from before, it's not like he just becomes nice but he slowly starts mellowing out especially to Mayu.

When you first see him, he's a jerk. He's an utter, unredemable man who you want to get killed off. After each appearance afterwards, you see him slowly chaging. He's stuill gruff, he's still rather a jerk, but you can see the heart in him, even if he wouldn't admit it himself.

And it all accumulates to what I consider the second greatest moment in the manga next to the end. The two paged panel of Bando's foot metting the Unknown Man's face and all that followed after. If you weren't cheering for Bando before, you were defintely doing it now. It was amazing how such a cold hearted and utter sociopath of a character went to being the top the line badass ready to save others.

And secondly, I love the fact that he's human. I love the fact that when everyone else is getting owned by the Diclonius, he's paying it back tenfold. He takes on Nana on his own and the only reason he doesn't get her down is because he's unfamilar with her body composition. He takes on Mariko and just watching Mariko's smug face change drastically when blows up the rocket in her face. I've already mentioned the moment with the Unknown man and then he utterly curbstomps Lucy in their second fight to the point where Lucy needs two people helping her. Its the kind of thing that I like because it shows that humans aren't weak or defenseless and in a world with superpowered people, having a normal person prove such a challenge to them makes me happy to be human myself.

crane476
Kurama is indeed a very good character, and goes through some enourmous character development, but I don't particularly enjoy the character, because of the reason I stated above. Kurama hunts down and imprisons Lucy in the facility where she is locked up and tortured, and kills her only other friend Aiko and makes it sound like her fault.

Lucy swore she'd get her revenge, and you know what? She got it. Yet by going crazy after the death of Mariko and by having his only goal left to kill Lucy it tells me one thing. It appears as if Kurama thinks that he's the only one that gets revenge. That even through all the things he's done to Lucy, he can kill the people close to her, but when she does the same in revenge, all bets are off.

That's one of the main reasons I don't enjoy Kurama. In the end he needs to quit being a little ?&%$* and take responsibility for his actions.
(And as for Lucy and Nyu being reborn, I knew that but what I meant was I favor an ending with Kouta and Lucy living together again because I don't really like Yuka at all either. lol)

Oh and I would have to agree with you on Bando, Reric. Manga Bando is also one of my favorite characters and like you said, its very interesting to see the changes he goes through throughout the series.

Tragic was Kaede
Wonton. Hands down best character in the anime and manga.

I really hate kakuzawa and kurama...Lucy has no fault that he became like that. I understand Kurama, but in Lucy's place I would have done the same. After all Lucy had the hardest life. She saw no fun in killing humans...
And i think Dog's name was Wanta

Tragic was Kaede
Wonton, Wanta, Tampon, or just Dog. Makes little difference as it was more of a joke, really. I don't really have a favorite character within the Anime or the Manga. If I had to pick, I guess I'd go with Lucy/Kaede/Nyu for both. It's kind of hard to pick another character as well, she's the storyline. Everyone else is kinda' just there to cause more drama for the main character. Some are alright, but most I find boring compared to the persona of Lucy.

The Raven
Even though I am relatively tardy to this party, I would like to state that i was in a similar position to crane. I knew exactly what was going to happen in the manga and swore to myself i was not going to read the manga as a result of it. In the end, i caved and decided to read, and was very happy i did. I laughed, smiled, and cried like a baby throughout even though i knew what to expect (especially with the ending). This is, IMO, the most underrated manga ever and deserves a great deal more credit then it is given. Sure it has some flaws, but this is a piece of artwork that truly draws you in until the very end and remains in your mind long after the final page.
